故事開始於1327年，梅森（湯姆·威斯頓-瓊斯 Tom Weston-Jones 飾）、卡裏斯（夏洛特·萊李 Charlotte Riley 飾）、戈文達（諾拉·馮·沃爾德斯塔騰 Nora von Waldst?tten 飾）和拉斐爾（奧利弗·傑森-科恩 Oliver Jackson-Cohen 飾）四名好友在森林裏玩，恰巧遇見了正遭到士兵攻擊的藍禮爵士（本·卓別林 Ben Chaplin 飾），藍禮殺死了士兵自己卻也受傷了。隻有梅森一人幫助了受傷的爵士，爵士帶著梅森埋藏了一封信，並告訴梅森，如果自己死了，一定要挖出這封信將它公之於眾。
一晃眼多年過去，獨裁專橫的羅蘭德爵士（彼得·弗斯 Peter Firth 飾）處死了原先的領主，並頒布了嚴苛的法令，拉斐爾則成為了羅蘭德爵士忠實的擁簇。
