這部劇集是上世紀九十年代最流行的情景喜劇《Seinfeld》的主創之一拉裏·大衛(Larry David)自編自演，根據他在洛杉磯影藝圈的生活創造的喜劇。他把《Seinfeld》的風格推向極端化。HBO因是有線電視所以不需要很大的觀眾圈，所以HBO上的劇集常常風格獨具。《抑製熱情》顯得特別生活化，很是寫意，有很多現場發揮，剛開始播時觀眾圈不大，之後開始名聲見長。拉裏·大衛憑此劇獲艾美獎2000年度喜劇類劇集最佳男主角提名。 本劇是根據拉裏-大衛當初在洛杉磯演藝圈的親身經曆改變而成，並由大衛自編自演而成的喜劇。把《Seinfeld》的風格推向了極端化。通過《抑製熱情》讓觀眾看到了大衛的正直、大方和謙虛，這位創作大師通過HBO帶給觀眾無數的歡笑。而劇情遊弋在真實與虛構之間，大衛和演員們把真實的洛杉磯生活呈現在銀幕上，就仿佛有一架攝影機，隨時把那真實的經曆實況轉播給觀眾一樣。更重要的是，本劇本身是沒有劇本的，往往依靠演員們的即興表演賦予演出進度和新鮮感。而這造就了本劇的變幻莫測和與眾不同。
