泰德（喬什·拉德諾 Josh Radnor 飾）、馬修（傑森·席格爾 Jason Segel 飾）和巴尼（尼爾·帕特裏克·哈裏斯 Neil Patrick Harris 飾）是三個好友，其中隻有馬修擁有一份穩定愛情——他很快要和幼兒園老師莉莉（艾麗森·漢妮根 Alyson Hannigan 飾）結婚了。而巴尼是個典型花花公子，對他來說，安定下來是不可能的。泰德倒是很想找到所愛，進入正常婚姻生活，也終於在酒吧遇到了心中的女神——美麗女主播羅賓（寇碧·史莫德斯 Cobie Smulders），豈料第一次約會，泰德就心急表白，將女神嚇到了。為了解決泰德的愛情困擾，幾位損友爭相為他出主意，羅賓也慢慢進入他們的好友圈……
