這部宮廷肥皂劇是E!頻道曆史上首個有劇本節目，劇情非常符合E!頻道的特點（E!頻道以報道娛樂新聞和八卦資訊、追蹤名人緋聞軼事、解讀情感關係而著稱）。《王室》十分類似已經被取消的NBC劇集《列王紀》（Kings），故事發生在虛構的現代英國（虛構的英國王室家族），是寓言故事和警世故事的結合體，主要描述人們被權力、富貴和欲望腐蝕後所作出的瘋狂行為。據稱故事框架類似於莎士比亞戲劇《哈姆雷特》。不知道英國王室對該劇感激還是憎恨？該劇把他們一個個描繪成陰險、無恥、下流、淫蕩的形象……正如劇中人所說，「金錢、性愛、毒品和權力」是王室成員唯一關心的東西。劇中人Helena王後（Elizabeth Hurley）一針見血地指出了這個王室家族存在的問題：「我女兒的陰部出現在四大花邊雜誌的封麵上，我兒子在和一個下人約會，我丈夫肩上壓著（世界危機引發的）千斤重擔。」這些事情...
