1990年代，北京。晨晨（石晨 飾）的爸媽在國外工作，他平日與爺爺（李丁 飾）一起生活。爺爺幹了一輩子郵政工作，退休後與孫兒相依為命。一天，祖孫倆把一封已故去的收信人的信件係在風箏上放飛天空，爺爺告訴晨晨：他在天堂會收到的。不久，媽媽（肖雄 飾）從國外回來了，她看不慣公公對晨晨的放任，每天給晨晨布置了英語、鋼琴等課程，原有的平靜不見了，爺爺搬回了自己的舊居。晨晨日夜思念爺爺，他恨透了什麽英語鋼琴，整天哭鬧不休，媽媽見此若有所思。爺爺的生日到了，晨晨與好夥伴琳琳送來生日賀卡祝福，爺爺帶他們外出放風箏，勞累一天後，在孩子們的歡笑聲中，爺爺竟然永遠“睡”去了......
本片獲德國第43屆柏林國際電影節國際青少年兒童影視中心獎；美國第10屆芝加哥兒童電影節最佳影片獎；荷蘭第7屆兒童電影節最佳影片大獎；伊朗第25屆伊斯法罕兒童電電影節最佳導演金蝴蝶獎。
