出生於巴基斯坦移民家庭的高中生納茲（裏茲·阿邁德 Riz Ahmed 飾），偷偷開走父親的出租車去赴一場朋友爽約的派對。他中途迷路，焦急之際搭載了帶著落寞絕望表情的女孩安吉拉（索菲亞·布萊克-德埃利亞 Sofia Black-D'Elia 飾）。霓虹閃爍的海邊，兩人互吐 心聲。納茲隨對方回到家中，在迷幻的氛圍中一切自然而然地發生。可當他醒來時，卻發現安吉拉已被人殘忍殺害。他驚慌失措，奪路而逃，結果半路因酒駕遭到逮捕，繼而因涉嫌殺害安吉拉遭到指控。在押期間，善於為邊緣人辯護盈利的小律師約翰·斯通（約翰·特托羅 John Turturro 飾）決定幫他洗脫罪名。臨近退休的警長丹尼斯（比爾·坎普 Bill Camp 飾）和檢察官海倫（珍妮·柏林 Jeannie Berlin 飾）則磨刀霍霍，發誓要坐實納茲的罪名。
