莫裏森一家四口搬到了澳洲一個小鎮。父親西蒙（艾瑞克•湯馬森飾）是當地駐軍軍官，母親瑪吉（托妮•柯利特飾）懷孕待產，大兒子查理（盧克•福特飾）患有自閉症，表現為語言障礙學習障礙，無法與人正常交往，小兒子托馬斯（瑞斯•維克菲爾德飾）進入新的學校，在遊泳救生員課上認識了美麗的女同學傑姬（吉瑪•沃德飾）。托馬斯不願讓同學們知道自己有個不正常的哥哥，但沒想到傑姬對查理竟能毫不介意。隨著瑪吉的臨產，托馬斯身上的負擔越來越重，同時隨著與傑姬的交往，他更加希望哥哥查理能奇跡般的病愈。但與托馬斯的願望相反，家裏添了新妹妹後更為雜亂，而查理的狀況也毫無改觀。托馬斯如何才能走出生活的陰影？
