某村楊家寡婦立福嫂與單身農民曾良臣相愛。楊氏宗族族長楊永成認為此事傷風敗俗，丟了楊家的臉，提出將立福嫂之女楊春梅嫁給曾良臣，以免家醜外揚。立福嫂懾於族法，不得不從。但春梅早已和同村青年朱小昌相愛。二人深夜相會，私訂終身，決心向封建思想挑戰。當晚，立福嫂與曾良臣也在竹林中商談，被榮三嫂聽見，欲抓她去見族長。立福嫂掙脫逃走，後上吊自殺被救。楊永成為整治立福嫂母女，重振族法，在祠堂內召開全族大會。王鄉長及時趕來，向群眾宣講新婚姻法，啟發群眾控訴過去地主把持祠堂、欺壓窮人的罪行，並砸爛了供奉在祠堂裏的地主牌位，推倒了刻有封建族法的石碑。與此同時，楊永成的女兒楊環因受封建婚姻之苦，在婆家終日挨打挨罵，受盡虐待，回到娘家又得不到父親的同情，終於含恨投河自盡。嚴酷的事實使楊永成受到了教育。楊春梅與朱小昌、立福嫂與曾良臣也終於在新婚姻法的保障下，結成了幸福的夫妻。
